White Lion Walk Shopping Centre is fully committed to reducing its impact on the environment and recognises climate change as one of the most serious environmental problems facing our community and the world today. We therefore take sustainability very seriously and all forms of waste minimisation are considered within our environmental policy.

Since 2001 White Lion Walk shopping centre has been committed to a series of initiatives designed to improve the environmental impact of the centre which focused primarily on the overall reduction in waste that is produced, the reduction in electricity, gas and water consumption and the increase in the recycling of waste along with the increased sustainability of equipment and consumables utilised within the centre.


  • Removed the supply of chilled water for air conditioning purposes to tenants and public areas.
  • Removed heating to public areas of the shopping centre. 
  • Removed over head door heaters.
  • Refurbished open plan entrances with automatic doors to maintain the environment within the centre.
  • Installed energy efficient light fittings where possible.
  • Installed time clocks and PIR controls. 


  • Reduced electricity consumption from 581,525 kWh’s in 2001 to 229,303 kWh’s in 2011 a massive saving of 352,222 kWh’s or 60.57%
  • Reduced gas consumption from 449,466 kWh’s in 2001 to 11,509 kWh’s in 2011 a massive saving of 437,937 kWh’s or 97.43%
  • Reduced overall waste produced from 134.58 tonnes in 2006 to 80.08 tonnes in 2011 a reduction of 54.50 tonnes or 40.50%
  • Reduced rubbish being sent to landfill from 70.78 tonnes in 2006 to 31.18 tonnes in 2011 a reduction of 29.60 tonnes or 55.95%
  • Reduced compactor exchanges and vehicle movement from 21 in 2006 to 9 in 2011 a reduction of 12 exchanges or 57.14%
  • Recycled 45.26 tonnes of cardboard which equates to 56.52% of all waste produced in 2011
  • Recycled 3.64 tonnes of polythene which equates to 4.55% of all waste produced in 2011
