Beanstalk Madness

Beanstalk Madness winners are crowned!
Last month White Lion Walk Shopping Centre and The Yvonne Arnaud Theatre teamed up with the Surrey Advertiser to launch their Beanstalk Madness Competition and on Wednesday 21st December, two young girls from Surrey were crowned the winners.

Emily Hazlerigg age 10 and Katarina Harrhy age 7 were presented with their prizes by Emma Thornett who plays the renowned character Jack in the pantomime alongside Dawn Phelps from the Shopping Centre and their loveable mascot Lionel the Lion. They each received a family ticket to see Jack & The Beanstalk at the theatre as well as an incredible sweetie hamper from Stateside Candy in White Lion Walk.

Website Competition Winner Collects Vouchers
Jonathan Hildebrand really did have a helping hand over the Christmas period thanks to White Lion Walk as he won £100 worth of shopping vouchers to spend at any store the centre.

His success came following the launch of the new White Lion Walk website as the centre ran a lucky prize draw for anyone that logged on and entered their details.

Jonathan was informed of his win the week before Christmas and his wife picked up the prize with 4 days to go before the start of the festivities.

Business is booming at White Lion Walk and welcomes two new stores
The arrival of two new stores to Guildford’s White Lion Walk Shopping Centre brings the scheme to nearly full occupancy despite reports of retail decline in the UK.

Handmade gemstone jewellery store, Westwood Rocks, opened last week and M J Crystal Beauty will open their doors to the public on the 17th December.

Westwood Rocks specialise in an array of beautiful limited edition handmade gemstone and freshwater pearl jewellery plus gives shoppers the opportunity to commission and design their very own pieces.

Christmas lights with a bang!
On Thursday 24th November, Guildford’s Christmas lights were officially switched on, but even the most spectacular events have to go out with a bang and this year was no exception.

During the lead up to the big day White Lion Walk teamed up with the Surrey Advertiser to find one lucky winner to push the button on the firework display and this year our winner was 12 year old Matthew Hawkins. In true celebrity style Matthew was invited to meet the Mayor of Guildford and the star of The Yvonne Arnaud Theatre’s Pantomime, Bonnie Langford for a photocall before being whisked onto the platform to push the all important button that saw the festive season start with a colourful bang.

‘Trick or treat’ was a safe bet at White Lion Walk
On Sunday 30th October, White Lion Walk Shopping Centre was the place to be for lots of Halloween fun. With the safest trick or treat trail in town and ghoulish face painting on offer, there were plenty of spooky shoppers enjoying their day.

The event followed research suggesting that, last year, the UK spent approximately £280 million on Halloween alone with thousands of children running around their neighbourhood in search of goodies.  However, organisers recognised that for many parents the tradition could be a daunting task as children become insistent on joining in the fun and games with their friends just as the nights begin to draw in.

Big Donation Launch

The BIG Donation launch at White Lion Walk
White Lion Walk Shopping Centre launched their British Heart Foundation (BHF) Big Donation event on Monday 24th October calling out to the local community to donate good quality items that can be sold in local BHF Shops.

The BIG Donation is a nationwide appeal to gather stock to sell in BHF Shops with 100% of the money raised helping the fight against heart disease.

From Monday 24th October to Monday 7th November visitors to White Lion Walk will be able to bring down previously loved, good quality clothing, shoes, accessories, books, CD’s, toys and bric-a-brac.  Unwanted furniture and electrical items can also be donated by calling 0844 412 5000 or booking a free collection online bhf.org.uk/bigdonation.

Macmillan Cheque presentation

White Lion Walk present a cheque for £130 to Macmillan Cancer Support thanks to World’s biggest Coffee Morning
On Wednesday 6th October, staff from White Lion Walk Shopping Centre were proud to present a cheque of £130 to Macmillan Cancer Support. The centre took part in the World’s biggest Coffee Morning on Friday 30th September, basing themselves at Artington Park and Ride where commuters into Guildford were treated to free Starbucks coffee and Millie’s cookies in return for a small donation.

From 7.30am, there was a constant stream of commuters using the Park and Ride and thanks to White Lion Walk’s centre management team and their cheeky mascot Lionel the Lion, around two hundred cups of coffee were drunk and one hundred and fifty yummy cookies were consumed.

Commuters enjoy coffee and cookies for a fantastic cause.
White Lion Walk raise £130 for Macmillan Cancer Support as part of the World’s biggest Coffee Morning.
On Friday 23rd September, White Lion Walk Shopping Centre made friends with many commuters travelling into the centre of Guildford via Artington Park and Ride as they treated them to free Starbucks coffee and Millie’s cookies. 

The main point of the morning was to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support through their World’s Biggest Coffee Morning campaign. As Macmillan helps thousands of sufferers throughout the year, the people of Guildford were incredibly generous when donating for their coffee and cookies which resulted in over £130 being raised throughout the morning.

24th September -Shoppers serenaded

Shoppers serenaded to help raise funds for The Terrence Higgins Trust
On Saturday 24th September, visitors at White Lion Walk Shopping Centre in Guildford were serenaded by the cast of Ghost’s Theatre Group production of RENT to help raise vital funds for the Terrence Higgins Trust.
From 12pm -1pm, the cast performed a variety of songs from the musical, which opens at the Electric Theatre on Wednesday 5th October.

Steve Cotney, Centre Manager at White Lion Walk, said: "As a shopping centre, we always strive to support local community events especially those linked with a great cause such as that of The Terrence Higgins Trust. Our shoppers were fantastic in supporting the cast of RENT and you could tell they really enjoyed their performance.”

Yumi is back in town at White Lion Walk
On Saturday 3rd September, White Lion Walk Shopping Centre’s new female clothing store, Yumi, opened its doors to the public.The ladies fashion shop features the latest trends at affordable prices, including clothes, bags and accessories. With a spacious area to display the wide array of goods on offer, it is sure to provide shoppers with a more relaxed atmosphere in which to browse.

Manager for Yumi, Jackie Hastings-Rose, commented: "We are really pleased that Yumi is, once again, in Guildford as it is a great location for us, full of fashion-conscious shoppers. We had a very successful opening day on Saturday and I’m looking forward to welcoming more of our shoppers and showing them round our new store.”

White Lion Walk ‘Roar’ to success for the Gir Lion Project!
On Saturday 20th August, White Lion Walk Shopping Centre was the ‘pride’ of Guildford when it hosted their first ‘lion fun day’ to help raise money for the Gir Lion project which is run by the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation. The day was a great success and featured a variety of fun activities including face painting, colouring work stations, meet and greets with the centres loveable mascot, Lionel the Lion and educational information from the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation.

Operations Manager of White Lion Walk, Trevor Gomm, commented: "As always we wanted to help a local charity so who better than The David Shepherd Foundation and their Gir Lion project since our name, logo and mascot are all lion themed. Our first lion day was a huge success raising over £100 so I am looking forward to our second day on Saturday 3rd September to see whether we can raise any more money for such a fabulous cause.”

An inter-galactic adventure lands at White Lion Walk
To celebrate the show ‘The Way Back Home’ appearing at Guildford’s Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, Trotters Childrenswear Store in White Lion Walk Shopping Centre, Guildford, played host to some fabulous storytelling sessions on Saturday 6th August.

From 11am to 2pm, youngsters were invited to hear award-winning author, Oliver Jeffers’, inter-galactic tale about a little boy seeking adventure.
One day a boy finds a plane in his cupboard. He flies his plane higher and higher until he runs out of petrol and lands on the moon. He is frightened, lost and alone until a passing Martian lands there too! Who is the strange alien? Can they be friends? And how will they find their way back home?

White Lion Walk Shopping Centre in Guildford has won three Green Apple Environment Awards in the national campaign to find Britain’s greenest companies, councils and communities.

They competed against more than 500 other nominations and will be presented with their Green Apple Awards at a glittering presentation ceremony in the House of Commons on November 14. Receiving awards for Maintaining Green Initiatives need not cost the earth, Reduce carbons and reduce costs and their Bee Awareness campaign which is helping save the honey bee and the environment.

Guildford Shoppers take a shine to the honeybee at White Lion Walk!
On Saturday 16th July, shoppers at White Lion Walk had a sweet surprise as the centre hosted a Honey Day to celebrate the first batch of local honey produced fresh from the bee apiary on the roof.

As part of White Lion Walk’s ‘Bee Awareness’ campaign, the day featured a variety of stalls all with a honey theme. From candles to cupcakes and even some bee beauty products, there was something to interest everyone.

On Saturday 9th July, White Lion Walk Shopping Centre in Guildford hosted a very special day for their shoppers as they linked up with Spectrum Leisure Complex to promote their Family Fun summer offers as part of the shopping centre’s ‘What’s On Your Doorstep’ campaign.

Throughout the day little shoppers were able to meet, hug and have their photo taken with the centre’s very own ‘Lionel the Lion’ and Specky the Dog, from Guildford Spectrum, as well as take away a host of free goodies from the leisure centre in preparation for the summer holidays.

Bzzzzzzrilliant result for White Lion Walk
White Lion Walk Shopping Centre bagged first place at this year’s Guildford Lion’s Charitable Raft Race on Saturday 2nd July and they are set to raise an outstanding £2,500 for the charity through their sponsorship! Following this year’s theme of movies, Centre Manager Steve Cotney and his team were unrecognisable posing as a hive of honeybees in celebration of their new bee awareness campaign within the centre.

The black and yellow striped bee themed raft equipped with bee hive, and a full sound system plus the centre management team dressed as honey bees, managed to come in first in their mechanical propulsion class at a time of 41 minutes.

Shoppers experienced a buzz for charity at White Lion Walk
On Saturday 25th June, swarms of shoppers in White Lion Walk found themselves surrounded by bees, thanks to the centre’s fundraising day for their upcoming Guildford Raft Race.

Throughout the day, a hive of bees (AKA the management team in fabulous fancy dress) were buzzing around the Shopping Centre as the theme for the White Lion Walk’s raft is the famous ‘Bee Movie’ to coincide with the general film genre of the 2011 Raft Race.  To make the ‘Bee Movie’ theme more apt, the centre’s choice of film stems from their current Bee Awareness campaign as they now have a fully functional bee apiary on the roof of the shopping centre, in order to help to maintain the number of honeybees in our country.

White Lion Walk & Guildford Lions present £1,000 to Guildford’s Halow Charity!
On Wednesday 15th June, Steve Cotney, Centre Manager at White Lion Walk, was joined by the president of Guildford Lions, Reg Swaden, as they presented a cheque for £1,000 to the Halow Charity who support young people aged 16 to 35 with a learning disability.

The donation came from White Lion Walk’s success in the 2010 Guildford Lion’s Charity Raft Race as they won the ‘Champion Fundraiser’ award by collecting almost £2000 in sponsorship as well as being crowned ‘Best Presented Raft and Crew’ and bagging first place in their class.

Learn how to make a Candle at White Lion Walk’s ‘Candle workshop’
On Monday 30th May, shoppers who visited White Lion Walk shopping centre in Guildford were invited to take part in a free candle-making workshop. From 11am to 4pm, shoppers of all ages created their very own bees wax candle to take home with them. 

The workshop was held as part of White Lion Walk’s ‘Bee Awareness’ campaign, as the centre now plays host to its very own bee apiary on the roof. According to the nation’s beekeepers, the English honeybee has been in serious decline over recent years.

At 12pm on Wednesday 25th May the head of Guildford in Bloom, Councillor Jennifer Powell visited White Lion Walk Shopping Centre in Guildford to cut a ribbon to officially launch the Centre’s new Bee Apiary. The Bee Apiary – located on the roof of the shopping centre – is part of the Centre’s Bee Awareness Campaign which has been developed in an effort to raise awareness of the plight of the honeybee.

On Saturday 14th May, White Lion Walk hosted a very special day for their shoppers when they linked up with The Spectrum Leisure Centre to host a spinning event in order to raise money for Disability Challenges.

From 10am – 4pm, Dean Girdler from The Spectrum, cycled continuously on his spinning bike and raised just under £100 in loose change to help Disability Challenges continue their incredible work of helping disabled children.

On Thursday 21st April, White Lion Walk was a hive of activity, as thanks to its ‘Bee Awareness’ campaign they held a fun and educational day for children to raise awareness of the nation’s honeybees.From 11am – 4pm members of the Bee Association were on hand to speak to the shoppers about the bees and demonstrate how the equipment works. There was also a free face painter available for the little ones to transform them into bees themselves, the perfect excuse for them to buzz around town for Easter.

On Tuesday 19th April, White Lion Walk Shopping Centre in Guildford played host to Surrey Sports Park to celebrate the Sports Park’s 1st anniversary. Featuring an array of exciting events for the shoppers, free giveaways and the ‘Storm the Stag’ mascot who met the famous Lionel the Lion from the centre, a great day was had by all.

Throughout the day shoppers visited the branded Surrey Sports Park unit and took part in some fantastic games such as Shoot the Hoop and The Shuttlecock Challenge.

On Monday 28th March, the Mayor of Guildford, Councillor Marsha Moseley, visited White Lion Walk shopping centre to officially launch the Centre’s Bee Awareness campaign, which has been developed in an effort to raise awareness of the plight of the honeybee.

According to the nation’s beekeepers, the English honeybee has been in serious decline over recent years and if this trend is allowed to continue not only will it contribute to a serious shortage of honey but it will also have serious implications on the nation’s agriculture, with many producers relying on the honeybee to pollinate their crops.

The famous survival expert Lofty Wiseman appearing at White Lion Walk Shopping Centre
On Saturday 5th March, visitors at White Lion Walk Shopping Centre will be in for a great treat as former member of the SAS Lofty Wiseman and survival specialist Glyn David visited the Trueways Survival store to give survival tips, advice and demonstrations to shoppers.

Between 11am and 4pm renowned author Lofty Wiseman gave special talks about survival and his 26 years in the SAS, as well as signing copies of his limited addition book ‘Ultimate SAS Survival’. Head Instructor Glyn David will also be giving survival advice throughout the day.

White Lion Walk Shopping Centre in Guildford, has won a Silver award in the prestigious RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards 2011.The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), a safety charity, launched its awards programme 55 years ago.

The scheme looks not only at accident records, but also entrants’ overarching health and safety management systems, including important practices such as strong leadership and workforce involvement.

Storytelling success at White Lion Walk!
Saturday 19th February, visitors to Guildford’s White Lion Walk were treated to a fabulous day of storytelling within Trotters Children’s Store where, with the help of the centres mascot Lionel  the staff of The Yvonne Arnaud Theatre told the charming tale We’re Going On A Bear Hunt which has enchanted children and adults all over the world.

We’re Going On A Bear Hunt by Children’s Laureate Michael Rosen, with illustrations by Helen Oxenbury’s, is a classic children’s picture book. The story follows a family who wade through the gigantic swishy swashy grass, the splishy splashy river and the thick oozy, squelchy mud!

White Lion Walk successfully launches What’s On Your Doorstep campaign
On Saturday 22nd January, White Lion Walk Shopping Centre, local businesses and the Mayor of Guildford, Cllr Marsha Moseley released over 500 balloons to celebrate the launch of their new ‘What’s on Your Doorstep’ campaign.

Local businesses, The Spectrum, Craggy Rock, Ghost Tours of Guildford, Christ College Ski Slope, Surrey Sports Park, Guildford Boat House, Boogie Pumps Dance School, Loseley House, Hatchlands park and the Yvonne Arnaud theatre all attended the launch at the centre to give the shoppers a fantastic insight as to what the town has to offer.
